Hi everyone I’m Dorrie, and this is my website Symptoms Thyroid Diseases. My posts will be giving you information on different thyroid diseases and things we can do to help our bodies to control our diseases or help to make us feel better. No I’m not a doctor but I live with several autoimmune diseases caused from my thyroid cancer and several autoimmune diseases that are affecting my body on a daily basis. I hope this helps or gives you a better understanding of the Thyroid Diseases we live with.

Thyroid Diseases

Hypoparathyroidism, affects 60,000 to 115,000 of us in the United States, 75% of cases is caused from damage or removal of the parathyroid glands during surgery of the thyroid. Regular monitoring of the serum calcium levels is necessary to figure out whether the patient’s Hypoparathyroidism is chronic or transient. If it’s still present after 6 months of the surgery it’s is chronic.

Symptoms Thyroid Diseases

Symptoms and Signs of Hypoparathyroidism, cognitive, neurologic, muscular, and cardiac systems can be affected. Neuromuscular, tingling of fingers and toes, laryngospasms, muscular cramps, and seizures, muscle spasms, twitching, and cramping, Carpopedal spasms, and weakness.

Neurocognitive, brain fog, referred to confusion and disoriented, inability to focus or concentrate, anxiety, Pseudotumor Cerebri, Basal Ganglia calcification.

Other symptoms and signs, Tetany, cardiac rhythm disturbances, and Tachycardia are a few. Progression of uncontrolled Hypoparathyroidism, over time and treatments can lead to complications some can be life threatening: Cataracts, Renal Stones, Renal Failure, Intracranial Calcification, Malformation Of Teeth, and Bone Density Changes.

Different Disorders

Several disorders can happen when our bodies produce to little hormone, (hypothyroidism) or too much (hyperthyroidism) four common disorders Graves’ disease, Hasimoto’s disease, Goiter, and Thyroid Nodules. Hypothyroidism, Fatigue, Cold Sensitivities, Constipation, Unexplained Weight Gain, and Dry Skin.

Hyperthyroidism, Rapid or Irregular Heartbeat, Weight Loss, Sweating, Irritability, The elderly most often do not experience any symptoms. Thyroid nodules usually do not cause any symptoms. Thyroid glands, hormones that regulate our bodies metabolism.

Types of Thyroid Diseases

Types of Thyroid Diseases and disorders that can happen to our bodies, Goiters, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Thyroid Cancer, Graves Disease, Adrenal Gland Disease, Thyroid Nodules, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Disorder, it’s when our immune systems produces antibodies that attack our own tissues in our bodies. Sometimes it involves our thyroid glands and this is typically why thyroid problems start.

All thyroid diseases can be treated not cured but treated and hyperthyroidism can be cured by removal of the thyroid. These foods are bad to eat when we have thyroid problems try to limit the intake of these foods Kale, Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, Cauliflower, Turnips, and Bok Choy. Research suggests digesting these vegetables can or may block our thyroids ability to utilize iodine. Which is important for our bodies normal thyroid function.

Early warning signs of thyroid diseases and problems, fatigue, very sensitive to cold, weight gain, puffy face, constipation, dry skin, hoarseness, and muscle weakness. How do we know if something could be wrong with our thyroid? Larger appetite than usual, weight loss even though our eating habits are the same, uneven heartbeat or fast sudden pounding, anxiety, irritability, and nervousness. If we experience any of these symptoms it’s probably time to make a doctor’s appointment to get a check up.

Nine Foods We Should Stay Away From

Here are a list of nine foods we should limit our intake of when having thyroid diseases or disorders they may have an effect on the absorption of or thyroid hormone medication. So having Hypothyroidism we should stay away or limit the intake of,

Number 1: Foods with Miso, Tofu, and Edamame, researchers suggest that soy could interfere with the ability for our bodies to absorb thyroid medication, we may want to wait four hours after consuming soy-based foods before taking our regular dose of thyroid medication. Check with your doctor to see what’s best for you.

Number 2: Cruciferous Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, if you have an iodine deficiency it may interfere with the production of your thyroid hormone. So digesting these could block the thyroid from it’s ability to utilize iodine, which is very important for normal thyroid function. According to the Mayo Clinic you would have to eat a lot of these cruciferous veggies, but cooking these vegetables can reduce the effect they have on the thyroid glands, also limit the intake a day to about 5 ounces may help as well.

Number 3: Gluten found in bread, pasta, and rice, limit intake in gluten, it’s a protein found in foods processed from wheat, barley, rye, and other grains. Referring to Celia Disease, gluten is found to irritate the small intestine effect our bodies from absorbing our thyroid hormone replacement medication. If, you choose to eat these foods try high fiber it could help improve bowl irregularity. With Hypothyroidism medication try to take a few hours before or after to prevent interfering with your medication.

Number 4: All things fried Fats have been known to disrupt our bodies absorption of thyroid replacement medicine. Fats may also interfere with our bodies thyroid ability to produce hormones as well. So professionals recommend cutting out all fried foods, and limit intake of butter, mayonnaise, and fatty cuts of meat.

Number 5: Chocolate cake and sugary foods. Hypothyroidism may cause our bodies metabolism to slow down and it did with mine, sugar is a lot of calories with no nutritional value so with a slow metabolism it will be easy to gain weight.

Number 6: Processed foods in packages and frozen, with an under active thyroid sodium can increase the risk of high blood pressure. Packaged foods tend to have lots of sodium in them. Read labels to try to find low sodium foods to decrease our chances of having high blood pressure. People with the risk of high blood pressure should lower their intake of sodium to 1500, milligrams a day.

Number 7: Excess fiber from beans, vegetables, and legumes, too much fiber is not good for Hypothyroidism treatments. Getting enough is good for our bodies, but fiber can interfere with our bodies absorption of thyroid hormone replacement medication. Our daily guide lines should be adults up to 50, 25 to 38 grams of fiber a day. So if you’re on a high fiber diet see if you’re doctor needs to raise your dose of thyroid medication.

Number 8: Coffee drinks this is my big one, we should only take our thyroid medication with water, wait 30 minutes and than we can have our cup of coffee.

Number 9: Our last one is Alcohol, this can wreak havoc on our thyroid hormone levels and the ability to produce hormones. It appears to have a toxic effect on our thyroid glands. It also suppresses the ability to use our thyroid hormone, so we should cut it our totally or use careful moderation.
